Introduction

In high-volume manufacturing environments, manual dimensional inspection often becomes a production bottleneck. It limits throughput, introduces operator-dependent variation, and increases the risk of inconsistent quality decisions.

To overcome these challenges, Global Machine Design Services (GMD) developed a custom Automatic Dimension Measuring Machine featuring a rotary indexing table, automated loading and unloading mechanisms, and multiple dedicated inspection stations. The system performs sequential dimensional measurements before automatically sorting products into OK and NG categories, providing fast, repeatable, and reliable quality control.

Project Overview

The objective of this project was to design an automated inspection machine capable of measuring multiple product dimensions within a single inspection cycle while minimizing manual handling.

Unlike conventional measuring systems that inspect one feature at a time, this machine combines several dedicated measuring stations around a precision rotary indexing table. Each station performs a specific inspection task, allowing multiple dimensional characteristics to be verified automatically before the product leaves the machine.

The project included:

  • Complete mechanical design
  • Rotary indexing mechanism
  • Automatic loading system
  • Multi-station measuring system
  • Automatic unloading mechanism
  • OK/NG sorting system
  • Pneumatic integration
  • Manufacturing drawings
  • Assembly documentation
  • Bill of Materials (BOM)

Customer Requirements

The customer required a fully automated inspection solution capable of:

  • Measuring multiple product dimensions
  • Eliminating manual measurement
  • Increasing inspection speed
  • Improving measurement repeatability
  • Automatically sorting acceptable and rejected products
  • Integrating with an existing production line
  • Supporting continuous operation

Engineering Challenges

Automated Product Transfer

One of the major challenges was transferring products from the conveyor to the measuring table without affecting positioning accuracy.

A pneumatic gripper mechanism was designed to automatically pick each incoming product and place it precisely onto the rotary indexing table.

This solution ensures:

  • Consistent positioning
  • High repeatability
  • Reduced handling time
  • Stable measurement conditions

Rotary Indexing System

Instead of moving multiple measuring devices, the machine rotates the workpiece between dedicated inspection stations.

This approach provides several advantages:

  • Simplified mechanical structure
  • Higher positioning accuracy
  • Faster inspection cycle
  • Easier calibration
  • Better long-term stability

Each indexing movement positions the product precisely at the next inspection station.

Multi-Stage Dimensional Inspection

The inspection process is divided into several independent stations, each optimized for measuring a specific dimension.

This architecture improves measurement accuracy while allowing different sensors to operate under ideal conditions.

Typical measured characteristics include:

  • Height
  • Step height
  • Outer diameter
  • Width
  • Profile dimensions

Machine Operating Sequence

The inspection process follows a fully automated sequence designed for continuous production.

1. Product Feeding

Finished products arrive at the inspection machine via an automatic conveyor.

The conveyor delivers each product to the loading position where it is ready for transfer.

2. Automatic Loading

A pneumatic gripper picks the product from the conveyor and accurately places it onto the rotary indexing table.

This loading mechanism eliminates manual handling and ensures repeatable positioning before measurement begins.

3. Height Measurement – Station 1

The rotary table indexes to the first inspection station.

At this position, the machine performs the first height measurement using a dedicated precision sensor.

This station verifies the primary height dimension of the product.

4. Height Measurement – Station 2

The indexing table rotates to the second inspection station.

Here, another critical height feature is inspected independently.

Separating the two measurements improves measurement flexibility and simplifies sensor calibration.

5. Horizontal Diameter Measurement

The product is then indexed to the horizontal measurement station.

At this stage, the system measures the external diameter (or width) using a dedicated measuring device, ensuring dimensional conformity in the horizontal direction.

6. Automatic Unloading Position

After all inspection steps have been completed, the rotary table indexes to the unloading station.

Inspection data has already been processed, allowing the control system to determine whether the product meets specification.

7. OK / NG Sorting

An automatic unloading gripper removes the inspected product from the rotary table.

Based on the inspection results, the machine places the product into either:

  • OK Tray – Products meeting all dimensional requirements.
  • NG Tray – Products outside specification.

This automatic sorting eliminates manual inspection and significantly improves production efficiency.

The machine incorporates several key mechanical systems working together:

  • Precision rotary indexing table
